Getting Pregnant After 40

If you are 40 and you are looking into conceiving another child, or if you decided to focus on your career and/or traveling earlier in your life but now you want to have a baby- you are aware that age can be a contributing factor on how difficult or easy it is to conceive.

However, don’t let that discourage you as there are tips and tricks to use if you are over 40 and want to conceive. Yes, conception may be more difficult after 40 but it certainly is not hopeless.

Many women even over 45 have given birth to healthy babies, and even older so there is no reason that you can’t fall into that category as well. But just realize that if you are over 40 and pregnant, you will need to be monitored carefully as more risks can crop up. But let’s not worry about that now as we need to take it one step at a time.

Let’s go back to focusing on the conception phase as there are steps you need to take in order to increase your chances of conceiving over 40.

Cycle Monitoring

Firstly in order to conceive, you need to know if or when you are ovulating. You will want to get a body basal thermometer to take note on whether you are ovulating or not, and chart your temperatures every morning. This is not the same kind of thermometer that measures your temperature if you suspect you have a fever. You can get these thermometers at drugstores like Walgreens. Be sure to take it the first thing after waking up before moving much as you will get the most accurate reading. A rise in temperature shows that ovulation has occurred, and you should take note of the rise and when in your cycle it happened. Be sure to chart for a few months so you know when in your cycle that you are most fertile.

You can also examine your cervical mucus and look at the texture as well in conjunction to taking your body basal temperature each morning. Your cervical mucus will be dry and scant early on in your cycle because that is when you are not fertile, but as your cycle progresses the mucus flow increases and becomes creamy in texture. But the closer you are to ovulation, the mucus becomes abundant and egg-white like and that is when you are most fertile.

You can also use ovulation predictor kits that measure the luteinizing hormone (LH) in urine, and a rise in the LH indicates that ovulation is on its way but I recommend to use these kits while you are actively trying because the costs of these kits do add up. Not to mention you only have a few sticks to measure for each cycle so it is better to have an idea of when in your cycle you are already ovulating before investing in these kits. Get to a Reasonable Weight and Incorporate Exercise

When you are ready to conceive at any age, you really need to consult the doctor so you are confirmed to be in good enough health to be pregnant. If you are overweight or underweight you will need to make significant dietary changes. If you have a BMI between 20-30, you are in a good zone weight wise to conceive. However if your BMI is between 25-30, you will need to be mindful about not gaining more than the recommended amount of weight in the pregnancy.

You also need to get moderate exercise to keep your body healthy and your system working which is walking for 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week. That is good enough.

Kick Bad Habits and Relax

This tip applies to anyone looking to conceive at any age, but you will want to make sure that you quit smoking, drinking and doing any kind of drugs before trying to conceive. Also cut your coffee intake to 1 cup a day, and take up yoga and meditation to keep your stress levels down as that can interfere with your ability to conceive. Especially the older you are.

Stick to a Fertility Diet Plan

You not only want to achieve a healthy weight but if you are looking to get pregnant after 40, you are going to want to stick with organic foods as conventional produce has harmful herbicides and pesticides which can hurt fertility. Not to mention, organic foods have more nutritional value.

Also incorporate a lot of whole fat dairy into your diet as the dairy fat from whole milk, cheese, butter, and plain Greek yogurt can increase fertility.

You will also want to eat cold water fish that has omega 3 which helps regulate the menstrual cycle, reduce inflammation and regulate hormone levels. The best types of fish to eat are wild salmon, Alaskan salmon and halibut, and cod. It is best to avoid north Atlantic salmon, farmed salmon, tuna, swordfish and Chilean sea bass due to mercury levels as that can be harmful to a developing fetus.

You will want to make sure that you are eating meat that is grass fed and organic as otherwise meats have added hormones that can create hormonal imbalances. If you also have endometriosis, you will want to make sure that you don’t each much red meat as that can aggravate the condition. When choosing chicken, make sure it is free range as they are healthier in general and will be better for your own health which involves your reproduction system.

Only stick with whole grains as processed grains and sugar can lower infertility such as white bread, pastas, white rice, and junk food. Choose complex carbohydrates such as whole wheat or sprouted bread, quinoa, brown rice and whole grain pasta. Keep up with the fiber intake. Also keep away from soy products as that can have a negative impact on hormonal levels, and be sure to drink a lot of water.
